About Haidong Gumdo
“Haidong Gumdo” is a Korean sword martial art, the name of which can be translated as meaning “East Sea Swordsmanship”: “Hai” referring to the sea and “Dong” meaning East or the direction of the sun. The word, “Do”, is often translated in English simply as “way” or “path”, with “Gum” meaning “sword”, which translates as “the way of the sword”.

The roots of Haidong Gumdo are in ancient Korean sword practices: Haidong Gumdo is a complex, beautiful and powerful martial art form that uses a variety of techniques to develop the student physically and mentally. Students learn forms, drills, and sparring techniques to develop physical stamina and fitness. Bamboo, straw and throw-cutting, along with candle extinguishing, teach focus and mental discipline. Meditation and proper breathing exercises relieve stress and promote a healthy mind and body.  And, the Haidong Gumdo principles of honor, integrity and self-control define the practitioner as a person.

Unlike Kendo (or the Korean equivalent, Kumdo) the focus of Haidong Gumdo is not one-on-one dueling but the development of pitched battle tactics.  Haidong Gumdo involves learning dynamic fighting forms - often against multiple attackers - using a broad range of offense and defense techniques. While the forms students learn as they advance through Haidong Gumdo appear elegant and beautiful, they are based in the strength and ferocity of battle tactics.

Haidong Gumdo is a relatively new martial art to the United States.  It was reintroduced in Korea about 20 years ago by Jeong-ho Kim, now president of the World Haidong Gumdo Federation.
